1.16.06Christmas pictures are up. 2.14.06 Look! I got to pet a penguin! Also you should all take-up backgammon. Its a fabulously wonderful game. 3.19.06Okay, I'm going to take a moment and take a break from this crazy busy semester to let all of you know a little about what is going on over here. First of all, the most exciting piece of news, which all of you should already know, I'm leaving for Greece in five weeks! I'm very excited. We fly out on April 24, the cruise starts on April 26 and goes until May 8. After that I'll spend a week in Athens and then fly back on May 16. Meanwhile, I have to wrap-up three classes here on the home front. I'm taking "Igneous Petrology", "Earth Systems Dynamics" (really just Fluid Dynamics), and "Coastal Hazards", which is soon to be dropped. Yep, I think I'm going to have to drop my first class ever. The professor is a very stubborn man and even though I talked with him about the cruise before the semester started, he is not being flexible at all. For that class there is a four-day trip to Cape Hatteras (North Carolina), so we have to leave early on Monday morning and then get back really late Thursday night/Friday morning. The problem being that I have to leave for the cruise the following Monday. Three days is not enough time to wrap-up two other classes and move, so I'm dropping the class. On the up side, I don't have to write a 10 page paper on tsunamis anymore. Other class news, I give my student seminar presentation tomorrow and its going to be spectacular. I've been pretty stressed about this presentation, because for a while there I was having trouble plotting my data. I finally got it sorted out and now I have lots of pretty pictures for my presentation. Hopefully, once I get back from Greece I will have time to develop a page dedicated to my research. That way you all will know where I spend hours and hours of my time. As for other things, life is pretty good. As I mentioned earlier, I have to move out of the place I'm in now before I leave for the cruise and I have to move out of my other place (where the majority of my stuff still resides) by the end of May. The original plan was to find a roommate and move back into that apartment. That didn't work out, and a better option opened up. I moving into a house with two other GSO students, one of them, Katy, I live with now. The house is a 15 minute walk to campus, 5 minute walk to a couple of friend's houses, and 5 minute walk to the narrow river. Yep, I'm going to get myself a little set of wheels and wheel my kayak down to the water everyday. Its going to be awesome! What else do I do? Well, I volunteer at the Mystic Aquarium and go bowling pretty much every Sunday. In fact, I now am the proud owner of my very own bowling shoes. They are super cool, white with pink flames on the sides! I'm the most stylish one in the alley. I was going swing dancing a lot, but then I got a little busy, so that activity has been put on hold for the moment. Yep well, now I think you are all up to date on my life. 4.12.06My proposal has been successfully defended!!!! 5.24.06Garage Sales I know you would all like me to talk about Greece, but I haven't got that stuff organized yet. I made it back safely and had a great time. Anyway, garage sales... Dylan and I offloaded a bunch of our stuff at a yard sale this past Saturday. It wasn't incredibly successful but we did get rid of a few of the high ticket items. People are so funny. We sold a pair of wine glasses for a quarter. The women sets them on the table and says, "Wrap these up for me." What did we look like? A department store? I had to scrounge around in the recycle bin for some old newspaper. All I could come up with was a few personal classified sheets from this small independent newspaper. So now her wine glasses are wrapped in paper with ads of the sort "Looking for hot female to share long walks on the beach and kinky..." well you get the idea. Another guy looks around for awhile and then visits the port-a-potty at the construction site across the street. I guess when you've got to go... we should have charged him a quarter. Yard sales are tons of fun. It feels so liberating to get rid of tons of stuff. I would definately recommend moving (or pretending you are moving) 1 time every 3 years or so. That way you get rid of all the junk you are not using, and your house gets cleaner than it ever was while you were living there. If you are really diligent (like myself) you could try moving 3 times in 1 year. That way you can have 9 times the fun. 6.8.06Today is World Ocean Day (and my birthday!) http://www.theoceanproject.org/wod
