Thursday, May 31, 2007 -- Blue Moon
If you've been waiting for that "once in a blue moon," tonight is one of those times.

Monday, May 28, 2007 -- Personality Test
I saw a link to an online pesonality test. I know there's a million of these out there but this one was designed by "a group of psychologists," using "scientific methods." It had comments from many people, professing it to be "amazingly accurate."
I don't usually bother with these things, but I had some time and I was a little bored, so. . . I took the personality test. After answering eleven pages of questions about myself, I received the results, and, based on those answers, the profile (done up in beautiful color charts and graphs), was indeed, amazingly accurate.
Oh, come on. Do people really fall for this?
If the test is based only on my answers of how I view myself, then it is simply quantifying my own perceptions. Of course it will appear to be accurate. It is, in essence, parroting back my own beliefs. It's like saying, "We've scientifically proven that you think you are what you think you are."

Saturday, May 26, 2007 -- Bird vs. Cat
Pip was sitting up on the sill of the high window above my desk. I watched as he became increasingly agitated by a very large, black crow flying back and forth outside. The bird, who was almost as big as the cat, flew over and landed on the roof right above the window. Then, leaning over the edge and kind of hanging upside down, he poked his head down in front of the window (and the cat) so that he was basically beak to nose with Pip. Separated only by the window screen, the bird was cawing at the cat and the cat was yowling right back.

Friday, May 25, 2007 -- Tap Dance Day
Today is --
National Tap Dance Day.
No wonder I'm feeling especially rhythmic.
Signed into law by President George Bush, it celebrates tap dance as a uniquely American art form. The date May 25th was chosen to honor the birthday of Bill "Bojangles" Robinson. Robinson is credited with putting the "bounce" in tap dance; dancing up on the balls of the feet rather than in the flat-footed style of the older "buck and wing." He also was the creator of the "stair dance."

But don't forget your towel as you "shuffle off to Buffalo."
Today is also --
Towel Day, a day of tribute to Douglas Adams, author of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Universe.

Thursday, May 24, 2007 -- Choice of Words
In an interview with Sheryl Crow, while talking about her concern with environmental risks and the use of plastics, she said, "There are ways [for us] to be conscious ..."
Conscious?
I think she must have meant to say conscientious.

She then went on to say, "I'd rather err on the side of being overly conscious."
Again, conscious?
This girl seems to have a rather limited vocabulary. Surely she meant cautious, here.

But I suppose she's right, though. One can really never be too conscious and it certainly beats being overly unconscious.

Wednesday, May 23, 2007 -- Fullerton
The school year is winding down. Last week (Sat., the 12th) we drove up to Cal State Fullerton to see Kimberly dance in the Spring Dance Concert and also to see Raymond's animation film which was being shown in the PMC Animation Festival, sponsored by the Pencil Mieage Club.
It was a busy day.
We thought we'd given ourselves plenty of time to get there, but due to an accident on the freeway, traffic was extemely slow. We arrived with barely time to race to the theater and pick up our tickets. "It's just down that path," we were told with a vague wave toward the building. Entering, we found ourselves wandering a labrynth of long, deserted hallways. Where's the theater?
Luckily we heard vioces, so we dashed around a corner in time to see some students about to enter a door. "Excuse me," I called "Where is the Little Theater?"
(Now what are the odds that the only person we'd run into would be . . . Kimberly?!!)
"Mo-om! What are you doing here? You're supposed to come in through the front of the theater."
She waved us on down a hall, mumbling something about stage doors and crazy parents, and that we'd better hurry. We got into the theater just in time, as Kimberly's dance was first on the program.
It was all modern dance and the show was very good.
That evening we went to the PMC Animation Festival, or as the kids were calling it, "Raymond's Premier." Raymond's film, "Flightless," is about a little penguin who wants to fly, but learns he can adapt his dreams to fit his limitations.
It is an incredible amount of work to put together even a few minutes of animation and it was interesting to see all the different animation students' films. Biased though my opinion may be, I thought Raymond's was the best.

We returned to Fullerton again last thursday to see the Choreographer's Showcase (of interpretive modern dance). Kimberly was both dancing in the show, and also had a piece she had choreographed being performed in it. Kimberly's choreographed piece, "My Umbrella," was one of my favorites in the show. Her use of umbrellas as props in the dance was very effective. There were several other pieces I especially enjoyed as well, but all of them were all very good, both in choreography and dancing.
CSUF has an excellent Theater Arts and Dance program as well as an excellent Art and Animation department - and a lot of very talented students.

Tuesday, May 22, 2007 -- Gilmore Girls
After seven seasons, it is sad to say good-bye to The Gilmore Girls. It was one of the few shows I made a point of never missing. Who wouldn't want to live in the quirky little town of Stars Hollow? And don't we all wish we were so clever as to be able to talk like a Gilmore Girl?

Friday, May 18, 2007 -- Photo Hunters
The theme for this week is FIVE.

Five hands. Five of us.

Friday, May 11, 2007 -- Photo Hunters
The theme for this week is CHILDHOOD.

I think this was a Sunday School program. That's me on the far left, wearing crinolines even then.

Thursday, May 7, 2007 -- Dream Car
This weekend we had a teenager (a fairly new driver) staying with us for awhile.
"Want to see my dream car?" she asked, pulling up a picture up from the internet.
"Sure", I said, expecting to see a fancy sports car in fire engine red, or maybe lemon yellow, with leather seats and mag wheels. Instead she pointed to a picture of a rather conservative Lexus four door hatch-back - basically the same car I'd like to have.
"Gee," I said, "Who would have thought you'd want a 'mom car'?"
"A mom car? What? That's not a mom car," she said. "That is NOT a mom car!"
A reliable, sturdy Lexus four door hatch-back, with room for kids and groceries? - yeah, mom car.
But the dream sound system she wanted in the car, however, was "all teen,"
