Tuesday, February 27, 2007 -- Parking Spaces
At the mall, next to the "Handicapped" parking spaces, I recently noticed several spaces marked "For Expectant Mothers Only." They are painted PINK - how funny. I'd never seen this before. It's a cute idea, but it does raise some questions. Does the expectant mother have to be "showing" to qualify to park in the special spaces. Does she need a special tag dangling from her rear view mirror, like the "handicapped tags," signifying that she is expecting? Or perhaps a note from her doctor? Is it good for the entire pregnancy or just the last trimester? Maybe she needs to be wearing pink? Or a "baby on board" button?
As I recall, getting around while pregnant wasn't the difficult part. But after the baby's arrival, when I was routinely carrying a baby, a purse, a diaper bag (sometimes two), baby blankets, extra clothes, sun hats, a fold-up stroller, several bottles, a few jars of baby food, a bag of toys, and a teddy bear - plus hanging on to another toddler (or two) with my "spare hand," - while crossing busy parking lots. That's when a special, closer parking space would have been nice.

Monday, February 26, 2007 -- It's My Birthday Today
"We turn not older with years, but newer every day." - Emily Dickinson
Happy Birthday to Me.

I love birthdays. - Of course, I've been celebrating all weekend.

The weekend celebration started with a birthday lunch at the Red Robin restaurant with Mom, Judi, and Josie on Saturday (chicken wrap sandwich, onion soup, and hot fudge sundae - yum).

Then yesterday, bright and early, we headed off to Disneyland. We stopped for breakfast at Carmel's, picked up Raymond in Fullerton, and then on to Disneyland. Weather-wise, it was a perfect day; a little overcast and cool, but not cold. It was a little crowded at Disneyland, as was expected, but not bad.
We went first to Space Mountain, (my very favorite rollar coaster anywhere - dark, fast, and smooth). I thought the new "rockin'" soundtrack was a little disappointing. Not that I don't like the Red Hot Chili Peppers, but the music just didn't seem to compliment the ride or have a Tomorrowland feel to it. Also the ride is not as dark, so you can see the track. It's more like taking a rollar coaster ride through a disco or a recording studio instead of "space." Still a nice ride, just not as good as before. (But, since this is a limited time Disney promotion, it will return to normal in May.) After Space Mountain we went to Thunder Mountain, Pirates of the Carribean, the Haunted Mansion, and Indiana Jones, before meeting Kimberly for the afternoon. (She was training on Matterhorn in the morning.)
We had lunch In California Adventure, rode the Screamin' Coaster, California Soarin', Monster's Inc., and the Haunted Hotel. We took silly pictures by the San Francisco city block and in A Bug's World, and watched how sourdough bread and tortillas are made (which included free samples of bread and tortillas).
Back in Disneyland, we went through Fantasyland and Toontown, (Mr. Toad, Small World, Matterhorn, Roger Rabbit, Gadget's) and back to Tomorrowland again (Star Tours, Astro Blasters, Space Mountain once more). We watched the Fireworks Spectacular and the "Disneyland; 50 Magical Years Show." Then we all met at Denny's for dinner and cappuccino before driving back to San Diego.
We pretty much saw everything, did everything, and took lots of pictures. A very fun day.

Tonight Lloyd and I are going out to dinner and to see a movie.
And we'll be watching MUPPETS all week. Thank you Julie.
Did I mention? - I love birthdays.

Friday, February 23, 2007 -- Wild Night
Wind, rain, cats, rats, and raccoons - It was a wild night last night.

Tuesday, February 13, 2007 -- Academics
Jay Leno was doing his "Battle of the Jaywalkers" last night. One contestant was introduced as being a student at Radcliffe with a double major in Political Science and Psychology, and hopes of becoming a lawyer.
Radcliffe? The one that's associated with Harvard?
Maybe I heard wrong.
Either way, what university wouldn't be pleased to be represented on national television by a political science major who thinks that George Washington was president during the Civil War and can't recognize a picture of Al Gore?

Wednesday, February 7, 2007 -- Coincidence
I opened a library book and read the first words on the page:
"Oxford, Mississippi, - The three of them walked together, their arms linked, as they left the campus of Ole Miss."
What a coincidence - Kerry comes tomorrow.

Sunday, February 4, 2007 -- Superbowl Sunday
Superbowl Sunday - According to a cop friend, this is the most dangerous day of the year to be out on the roads, ranking even higher than New Year's.

Thursday, January 31, 2007 -- The Word
I believe myself to be a fairly religious and/or spiritual person, but I don't believe in proselytizing and I don't like strangers knocking on my door. Listening to a sermon while standing in the doorway, wearing grubby sweats and holding a bottle of Tilex, is awkward at best. I just have a hard time being receptive to the message of anyone who shows no respect for my sense of privacy, security, and timing, plus I always have to keep a watchful eye that none of the cats escape out the gate which they invariably leave open.

Thursday, January 25, 2007 -- Lights
A conversation relayed to me by Raymond -
"Sara said that when she has her own house she is going to put up Christmas lights and just leave them up all year."
To which he had responded, "Yeah, that's what my mom does."
Sara - " No, I mean I'm going to light them all year."
Raymond - "Yeah, that's what my mom does."

Of course, we call them patio lights ... now.

I'm a redneck woman, I ain't no high class broad.
I'm just a product of my raising, I say, 'hey y'all' and 'yee-haw'.
And I keep my Christmas lights on, On my front porch all year long.
And I know all the words to every Tanya Tucker song.

Wednesday, January 24, 2007 -- Happy New Year
A friend mentioned that recently when leaving a store he waved to the clerk and said, "Happy New Year," to which the man responded, "You're a little late, aren't you?"
Now he is wandering if there a time limit on when it is proper to wish someone a Happy New Year.
It is still January. The year is still new, and there is still lots and lots of time to attain happiness.
I say accept and enjoy any friendly greeting that comes your way. They can never come too often.
Happy New Year!

Tuesday, January 23, 2007 -- Resolutions
I know it's been forever since I've posted, but I am still here.
The holidays are passed and the Christmas stuff is finally all packed away. It seems so long ago now, as we return to the routine of normal life.

I've never been a big fan of New Year resolutiions. Since statistically they are seldom kept, setting oneself up for failure has never seemed to me a good way to start the new year.
Not that I don't have goals for the future, I do.
But right now, when I look around at the chaos of my surroundings and life, (and you can believe me when I say it is chaos), I feel overwhelmed, intimidated, paralized. There is so much to do that I can't seem to do anything.
However, I was recently reminded of the philosophy of a friend. She used to say that when things seem to be overwhelming, you should "clean your sink" - clean it completely, thoroughly, brilliantly, spectacularly - scrub it, polish it, shine it. Not only is the job of working hard at a physical task therapeutic, but more than that (and not to say that my actual sink couldn't use a good scrubbing), what she meant, metaphorically speaking, was to start small. Choose one attainable task, focus only on that task until its completion, do it to the absolute best of your abilities, and then revel in the success of your accomplishment; your ability to complete the task. Because, by attaining one small goal, it enables you to move on to another, and another, as success breeds success, and gives you the power to attain more.
So, having given it some thought, I can now say my New Year's resolution is ... to clean my sink.
