Wednesday, August 31, 2005 -- Devastation
The scenes coming out of New Orleans are just beyond comprehension. I don't understand why there are not enough buses to move the people out of the city. Why aren't there convoys of cars, trucks, vans, school buses, ANYTHING on wheels? Why aren't we sending in military transport vehicles instead of tanks? All the talk of fund raising and telethons is great and certainly will be needed, but it doesn't address the immediate need of the people. They need to be taken somewhere, ANYWHERE, where there is water and food, NOW. We can deal with the rest later.

Tuesday, August 30, 2005 -- Hurricane
For those who are interested -
I do not know what sort of damage John and Carolyn's house sustained during the hurricane, but this is what I do know right now, after talking to Colleene:
The house itself is located about three miles from the coast, just east of Biloxi. It is a brick house situated on land that was above sea level. It is surrounded by a woods which may have given it some blockage from the wind, but it also has a creek/river running along the property line.
John, Randy, Carolyn's son, Carolyn's daughter and her husband, and also a nurse were staying at the house last week. I don't know if they evacuated.
Heidi has not been able to get in touch with John as yet, as there is no phone or power service.
Carolyn was actually here in California for a horse show at the time of the hurricane. She is currently trying to get back to Mississippi. The closest flight she could get took her to Dallas where she rented a car and is driving the rest of the way.

Kerry and Stacy, situated further north, are fine. Katrina was a tropical storm when it passed them.

[Edited September, 2005] - Everyone is fine.
John and Carolyn's house withstood the storm and has very little damage. Carolyn's daughter's house in Biloxi also survived with little damage, though the house across the street from her is completely gone and every other house on the street sustained major damage.

Friday, August 26, 2005 -- Cute Kittens
There are lots of cute kitty pictures at Cute Little Kittens.com

Thursday, August 25, 2005 -- Raymond's Cats Cats
Since Raymond has left, the two black cats, whom I've hardly seen all summer, now both want to sit in my lap all day.
They miss Raymond.
Luckily, the two of them get along and Allie doesn't seem to mind if Angel sits right on top of her.
It's amazing how similar these cats are, in personality as well as appearance, considering they are not related at all.
It does slow down my typing, however.

Tuesday, August 23, 2005 -- Pow!
At the Disney Playhouse Show in California Adventure, we joined the audience (average age, about six) sitting on the floor watching a cute, interactive puppet show, where they encourage the kids to get up to jump, dance, sing, and chase bubbles.
It was the bubbles that proved to be almost catastrophic as one little tyke, intent on chasing them, came racing toward Kimberly. She quickly ducked back, barely avoiding his little fist slamming into her head.
"Wouldn't it have been funny if you'd gotten a black eye from a three year old?" Raymond said.
Yeah, a puppet show is such a dangerous place.

Monday, August 22, 2005 -- Disneyland Mickey
We went to Disneyland yesterday, the day before school starts, as we have done the last couple of years. I guess that marks the official end of summer for us.
Random observations of the day -
  • It was very crowded, (but, of course we knew it would be.) We never even got into Fantasyland. We spent the whole day in Tomorrowland and New Orleans, (And also California Adventure.)
  • The newly re-opened Space Mountain is, as Raymond and Kimberly say, "wicked awesome."
  • The bright and colorful Parade of Dreams is wonderful.
  • The Evil Zerg would take over the Universe if it were up to me to stop him. (I could blame it on the laser gun, but it probably was my aim.)
  • Glasses left in a pocket will fly out in a dropping elevator.
  • No matter where I sit on Splash Mountain, I am the one who gets hit with the wave of water.
  • The use of Fast Pass, though a great time saver, also requires one to walk from one extreme end of the park to the other, several times.
  • Disneyland definitely knows how to do fireworks! They put on a great 50th Celebration display.

Wednesday, August 17, 2005 -- Back to School
Raymond and Kimberly packed up the cars and headed back to Fullerton this morning. Classes start next week. In addition to his computer stuff and art supplies, Raymond, of course, took his new unicycle and new juggling balls and clubs.
Kimberly, in anticipation of her dance classes, bought several new leotards and tights.
"You do back-to-school-shopping a little differently than most people." Kerry said.

Wednesday, August 10, 2005 -- Radio City Rockettes Rockettes
The Radio City Rockettes performed on the Today show this morning to "kick off" ticket sales for this year's Radio City Christmas Spectacular Show.

Coincidentally, Kimberly is currently attending the Rockettes Summer Intensive Program, a comprehensive summer training program that allows dancers "the unique opportunity to train with Radio City Rockettes and learn their world famous precision dance technique, including Jazz, Tap, Musical Theater, Post Modern, Lyrical, Latin, and of course, the legendary Kick Line."
Working with Rockette dancers and a Rockette Director/Choreographer, students take six hours of class daily and attend group education seminars in the evening, culminating in a performance at the end of the session.
As only four Intensives are held each summer, dancers must meet specific criteria and also audition for the opportunity to attend. Being accepted is quite prestigious.
We are looking forward to seeing Kimberly dance in the show next Saturday.

    Monday, August 8, 2005 -- Truth
"If you don't know the truth, but you think you do, it's not so bad. Your truth will do."
"How can we ever hope for a real truth?. It will be different for everyone."
    - from "Astonishing Splashes of Colour" by Clare Morrall

Friday, August 5, 2005 -- Worse Than Kids
First the printer tells me there is no paper when, clearly, there is.
Then the scanner decides it doesn't want to "comunicate" with the computer anymore.
What? They seemed to be on speaking terms yesterday. But today, they are no longer friends.
Sooo . . . just exactly what went on here last night? And . . . was that new phone involved?
    Just wondering.

    Thursday, August 4, 2005 -- Poor Dog
We are manuevering through heavy traffic at an intersection when, all at once, there is a tennis ball bouncing down the street in between the cars.
    "Where did that come from?"
    "The dog dropped it."
A large dog in the back of a pick-up truck is looking over the side, watching his ball disappear into the traffic. Oh, Poor dog.

    Tuesday, August 2, 2005 -- Trash Day
Today is trash day. The cats have been busy this week. I've picked up two dead rats, one mouse, two lizards, and something unidentifiable.

    Monday, August 1, 2005 -- Hello?
I now have a cell phone. (Yeah, yeah, if you know me, you're laughing.)
I finally gave in to family pressure.

So, Sunday we went to the phone store and got the simplest and cheapest available, nothing fancy, nothing extra. Completing the paperwork and assigning us numbers, the clerk said "Okay, Now just make a call to make sure they work."

Make - a - call. Okay. We all looked at each other blankly.
"I don't know anyone to call."
    "Me neither."
"Do you know anyone's phone number?"
"No. I can't think of anyone."

"Just call your house. No one has to answer, it just has to ring." she said.
"Oh! Well okay, We can do that." So we phoned home four times to find that no one was there.
"And, you're all set." she said.
"Oh good," I said, "Now we can go home and call each other."
"We don't even have to go home," Lloyd said, "we can call each other in the car."
"You guys are funny." she said, (which is clerk talk for "What planet did these people come from?")

Arriving home, I got my first cell phone call.
"I'm going to call you." Lloyd yelled up the stairs.
"Okay." I yelled back, as the phone erupted with high pitched Can Can dance music. Resisting the urge to do high kicks, I flipped it open and viewed the buttons marked "Send," "Clear," and "End." There was NO button marked "Start," "Talk," "Answer," "Begin," or "Stop This Annoying Music."
"I don't know how to answer it." I yelled down the stairs.

NOTE TO JULIE - We're sending you a phone. You should get it in a few days. Give us a call.
