Sunday, July 31, 2005 -- Wild Animal Park
We went to the Wild Animal Park on Friday. (It is way too hot to spend the day at the Wild Animal Park.) But . . . it was a fun day. The new Wild Animal Park Lion Exhibit is awesome! The evening tram ride was nice. And the Mapapa Acrobat performers are back. Saturday, July 30, 2005 -- Italian Kimberly - "All I've eaten in the last 36 hours is Italian food. It's like I'm at school again." Don't even try to figure it out. Friday, July 29, 2005 -- Welcome Back, Cully's Last February one of our favorite local restaurants, Cully's in Poway, closed, having been forced out by the management, who evicted them to put in an Italian restaurant, instead. One of the last few small, owner-run businesses, Cully's was nothing fancy, but with a casual, country decor, they offered good food in large portions at reasonable prices, served by a friendly staff. They always had a line out the door on Sunday mornings. Of course we are always sympathetic to the problems of small businesses, so we were happy to see the new Cully's sign while driving down Poway Road. Raymond and I had lunch there yesterday and the owner greeted me with, if you can believe this, a hug!? (It's not just square dancers!) Apparently they've been open for about a month but just got their sign up last week. It's good they're back. I'm sure that, once the word is out, they will be as busy as before. Thursday, July 28, 2005 -- Landscaping After a month of mourning the loss of my tree, I am now almost finished re-landscaping the front yard. On top of the tree stump I put a planter of geraniums that will cascade out and around it as they grow. Then with borders of river rock, I planted low maintenance ground covers and flowers (gerraniums, lilies, and agapantha) radiating out from the stump following the design of the tree's root structure. Suzanne also brought over a lot of clippings and plants to help fill out the yard so it's starting to look really nice. I still miss the tree, but I guess it was much too large for a small yard. Tuesday, July 26, 2005 -- Spiders We are being taken over by spiders. The netting I put up to keep the cats in also keeps the birds out, so with no natural preditors, the spiders have been multipliying uncontrollably. It appears I have unwittingly altered our eco-system and now there are spider webs everywhere. They are covering all the plants, stretching from the bushes to the fence to the patio furniture; crisscrossing the entire yard. I have no doubt that before long these spiders will begin to mutate into huge, monstrous things, possibly the size of Volkswagons, and begin to plan their attack on the neighborhood. It's only a matter of time before we will be living a bad sci-fi movie. Monday, July 25, 2005 -- Nocturnal
Oh, well sure, he's asleep now. He should be tired after yowling for seven hours straight. I know I'm tired having listened to him all night. Unfortunately, the rest of us can't afford the luxury of napping for the next 17 hours. Come evening, I'm sure he'll be ready to go again. I don't know what's gotten into this cat. He's always been whiny, but the last few nights he just won't settle down. In or out, it doesn't matter, he's not happy. Saturday, July 16, 2005 -- Long Awaited Willy Wonka and Harry Potter all in the same week! Kimberly is in Heaven. Wednesday, July 13, 2005 -- Snake I'm driving along. All at once Raymond shouts, "Snake." "What?", I say. "Snake. Snake. Stop." "What?", I say again, still a little lost in the conversation. "BACK UP. There's a snake in the road. RIGHT IN FRONT OF OUR CAR." Luckily there was no traffic, so we backed up and stopped. "Is that a rattle snake?", I ask, with my head hanging out the window to see the three foot long snake crossing the street. Yes, there was definitely a rattle on the end of the tail. Why would a snake be crossing the street? Obvious answer... To get to the other side. So we watched the snake squiggle across the street, on the way to the canyon, I guess. Saturday, July 9, 2005 -- How To Fold A Shirt How to fold a shirt - it's quick and easy, just pinch-fold-snap, and like magic the shirt is folded into a perfect rectangle with the neck nicely centered. "Where'd you learn that?", Lloyd asked. "At How To Fold A Shirt.net, of course." It just goes to show; you really can find just about anything on the internet. Of course, the instructions are in Japanese, but the video's kind of fun to watch. Later Lloyd, Raymond, Kimberly, and I were all gathered around a laundry basket, laughing as we tried to duplicate the video's perfectly folded shirt. It does take a little practice to get the technique down. It was a family-laundry-bonding moment. Thursday, July 7, 2005 -- Chocolate Day Today is Chocolate Day. Indulge and enjoy! * Charlie and the Chocolate Factory opens July 15th. From the Warner Bros. Press Release - "In celebration of Chocolate Day and the upcoming July 15th release of the film Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, master chocolatier Willy Wonka is sending an Oompa Loompa Ambassador to Los Angeles. The Oompa Loompa (Deep Roy) will dance high above Hollywood on the film's billboard to two of the Oompa Loompa songs Danny Elfman created for the film." Chocolate, the most popular flavor in the U.S., comes from the cacao tree and has even been shown to have some anti-oxidant properties. Dark chocolate especially, containing a lot more cocoa than other forms of chocolate, is loaded with flavoniods. Here are some Chocolate Day menu suggestions offered from Holiday Insights --
Monday, July 4, 2005 -- Fourth of July
Happy Independence Day!
This is the first year since 1990 that we haven't gone to the Rancho Bernardo Spirit of the 4th Parade. It's also the first year we have had no kids home for the day and somehow it just doesn't really feel like the 4th of July. We started going to the RB parade in 1990, at first to see Julie performing with her baton troop, (1990-1995), and then to watch Raymond ride his unicycle and juggle, (1996-2004). Raymond and the Cal State Fullerton Juggling (and Unicycling) Club are participating in the Lake Forest 4th of July Parade. Raymond started the juggling club at CSUF this year and has worked hard to get new members, both jugglers and non-jugglers who would like to learn. This will be their first parade. Lloyd and I will still be going to see the fireworks tonight in Mira Mesa, so that should make it feel more like the fourth. I love fireworks! PQ always has their fireworks display on July 3rd, (or in this year's case, the 2nd, since the 3rd was a Sunday). This way they don't compete with Mira Mesa and the fireworks are less expensive. They put on a pretty good display this year, and, because they were held at Westview High (since Mt. Carmel has so much construction being done), we were able to see them from the street behind our house. We could even hear the music. Cool. Saturday, July 2, 2005 -- I am the Sun What tarot card are you? Enter your birthdate.
Yeah, that sounds about right. |
