October 31, 2004 -- Fall back.
We have thirteen clocks in the house, not counting the ones on the computers.

October 30, 2004 -- Racoons.
We've been ransacked by racoons AGAIN.
My netting apparently does nothing to keep the racoons out of the yard and they have found the kitty door. We've already narrowed the opening twice. I watch the cats squeaze through the opening and I know the racoons are bigger than the cats, but I guess they're just all fluff because they can still get in. Today I came down to birdseed all over the front entry and trash spread all over the kitchen. They ate all the cats dry food, as well as an entire package of cookies, a few candies from a candy dish, and whatever else they could get into. There were no broken dishes this time anyway. And, at least they didn't find the bowl of Halloween trick-or-treat candy, or there really would have been a mess.

Last week I was awakened to the birds screeching. I could see that the cover was off their cage and I thought maybe a cat had pulled it off. But, as I was coming down the stairs to fix it, a big racoon came ambling through the entry. Seeing me, he stopped, turned, growled and hissed at me. I then saw there was another one in the dining room. I don't know if they would attack me or not, but they definately are not friendly and they are not afraid of me.
After we got the racoons out of the house I saw the little blue bird on the bottom of the cage. There he was lying on the bottom of the cage with his legs in the air like in the old cartoons. I thought the poor little thing had had a heart attack but as I picked him up, he seemed to revive. Maybe he just fainted from fear. I don't know. He seems to be okay now.

October 27, 2004 -- Summer is over.
I know that summer is over when Toby packs his little kitty suitcase and moves back in for the winter. All summer he likes to stay outside, coming in only to eat. But as soon as the weather turns a little chilly, he moves back in and suddenly becomes Super Lap Cat, wanting to sit with me all day.
Everytime I sit down, Toby jumps in my lap. He doesn't even care if there's another cat there already. Allie and Angel, and sometimes Purrs, will share a lap with him. Patches definitely will not. She doesn't even like sharing the same house with the others.
Patch is getting so spoiled. Now we even feed her in a separate room.

Pip does not like being confined indoors at all. And he does not like the rain. So while the other cats find warm, cozy spots to snuggle down, he moves from window to window, yowling. He tries one door. (It's raining.) He tries the other door. (What? It's raining on this side of the house, too?) He decides to go out the kitty door anyway, then comes back soaking wet, complaining "Meow, meow, meow." I try to get him settled, but he goes out again, gets wet again, and comes in complaining again. This goes on three or four times during the night.

October 20, 2004 -- Sad news.
Sean McKinney
From Raymond's blog I just learned about the death of Sean McKinney.
We knew Sean in 1994-95 when he was with the Fern Street Circus, teaching juggling to the kids in the Circus Skills Afterschool Program. He was a very nice, charming, extremely talented young man. The kids adored and idolized him.
Raymond was just starting to juggle then. Sean inspired him and taught him some more advanced techniques. Sean was also the one who got Raymond started riding the unicycle.

There are really no words to express the sadness of a young life ended too soon.

October 19, 2004 -- Leave mail here.
The Post Office has a loading dock in back where we drop our packages so we don't have to wait in line inside. There's a large cart labeled "Leave Pre-Postaged Mail Here" where people leave their mail. On Saturday the cart was pretty much already full, so we piled our boxes next to it. Yesterday when we arrived there was a second cart to the side with a sign "Fun 'n Folly Here."

October 17, 2004 -- Rain.
The local news for the last two weeks has been focused on whether or not we would break the record of the longest dry spell, (181 days.) Our last rainy day was on April 17th.
Well, the rain did hold off until after midnight on saturday, so we broke the record (which was actually set just last year), and about three hours later it started raining.
Poor Pip, he didn't remember ever seeing rain and it rather distressed him.

We went out to breakfast at a local coffee shop and found them to be busier thatn usual. We were told that rainy days, especially Sundays, are always busy. I don't know why that would be, but they say their business increases by 30-40% on rainy days. I would think people would tend to not go out in the rain, but maybe we have so few rainy days that people want to get out in it. Or maybe, since other outdoor activities are not an option, they just say "Well, let's go out for breakfast, instead, then." I don't know. I like the rain. I've always wanted to live where it rains more often.

"I love to walk in the rain, Look for me when it's stormy out.
I love the rain, so I'll be there.
I know it's fun in the sun, The lightening may be frightening.
I love the rain, so I don't care.
Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday,
How about a week with every day a pitter-patter day.
I wouldn't complain. I love to walk in the rain."

- from an old children's song

October 12, 2004 -- Superman.
I was so sad to hear of Chistopher Reeve's passing. He was always so positive and strong, somehow I just thought he really would walk again. He did so much to increase research on spinal cord injuries and was very generous when working with other paralysis patients.
He was a good role model, really much more of a Superman than any of us knew when we were watching that movie.

October 7, 2004 -- Private showing.
Yesterday I went to a movie matinee and I was the only one, the only ONE, in the theater. I had a private movie showing on a big screen and I'm not even a pop star.

October 6, 2004 -- Who let the dogs out?
Workers at an animal shelter in England couldn't figure out why all the dogs were running free each morning when they arrived at work. They set up hidden cameras to find out what was going on. It turns out that one of the dogs, Red, had figured out how to open the cage doors and was throwing doggy parties each night. Not only did he let himself out, but he let the other dogs out of their cages, too, so they could all raid the kitchen. Maybe he's been watching too much Lady and the Tramp.
I hope the person who adopts Red has good locks on their doors.

October 3, 2004 -- I know where they got that hat.
The producers of the Harry Potter movie somehow found our little costume business and bought six of our novelty hats, (two each of three styles.) They even sent a special currier out to pick them up. Of course, a lot happens between the filming of a movie and the presentation of the final product. With all the cutting and editing, that scene may never make it to screen. But, there is a chance that while watching the next Harry Potter movie, we will be able to nudge the person next to us and say, "Hey, I know where they got that hat."

October 1, 2004 -- October is here.
October is here. Halloween is coming. Busy, busy, busy!
